Teacher's Corner (By Mr. Singer): Well, summer is officially over tomorrow and autumn begins. It seems like the weather is right on time as well, and for me I am excited it is here. This week the students are in full swing with routines, homework, and expectations. We are still holding on well as a class. We had our first quiz in math. As a sixth grade class, the scores were not too bad. As I told the kids, everyone is eligible to do a retake next week if they desire. They will just need a parent’s signature on their quiz.
Next week we will begin our MAP testing. Next week’s focus is reading and the week after is math. We will be conducting the testing in our classroom during their class time. For more information on what MAP testing is, click here.
Next week will also be our first APTT night on Thursday. It will begin at 6pm. If you are interested, I will be conducting a section on math and Mrs. Wanasek will be doing one on reading. The presentations run 6-6:45 and 6:45-7:30 so you can go to one, and then the other. If you have other students in other classes, you can also chose to go to their classroom and then attend one of ours. If you really want to attend both, but can’t make it to both, let us know and we can arrange additional time to go over the goals, activities to do at home, etc.
This week we started doing our ALICE trainings. ALICE is our safety program and it stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. Each week we will work with our students to make sure they are safe. Below is the lesson that was conducted this week for ALICE. Please take time to discuss the lesson with your children.
6th Grade - ALICE Lesson Two: Stop, Look and Listen Signal
Lesson Goal: Know how to respond effectively and quickly when given the STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN signal.
Lesson Recap: Students learned the importance of Stopping, Looking, and Listening when they heard a specific signal. This signal is very important for students to learn and know so that they can receive important instructions from their teacher at any time, including in the event of an emergency. Please ask your child what his/her class signal is and have a discussion about why it is important to stop, look, and listen when they hear and/or see the signal being used by the teacher. The sign is shown below. It is a “zero” sign to coincide with our PBIS “no talking/silence” sign which is the same WGSD universal signal is “0” voice level (PBIS).
