We do DOL, which we correct sentences, decide if they are similes or metaphors, antonyms or synonyms, etc. Our auction letters are edited, and now we just need to make the changes to our draft. We’ll be mailing out our donation requests to local businesses next week.

Teacher's Corner (By Mr. Singer and Mrs. Topp): Happy THURSDAY everyone. Seeing as we do not have school tomorrow we are sending out the newsletter a day early. We hope you enjoy the extra day with you children. We teachers will enjoy a day of meetings….. Anyway, here are some important notes for you.
Next week Mrs. Topp and Mr. Singer will begin using the points system in Class Dojo. The following is from the 6th grade handbook about what we will be doing:
At Trailside, it is our goal to start all of our school days on a positive note. The sixth grade teachers and specialists will be using Classdojo to keep track of each student’s progress throughout the week. Each student will receive 3 “Daily Positive Start” points. The goal is to maintain the points throughout the day by being Safe, Respectful, and Responsible. If for any reason a student does not meet these Trailside Expectations, they will lose a point.
If the students earn the required number of points, they will be rewarded with large group incentive time. This will take place every week and will consist of a variety of activities including, but not limited to social time, games, contests, etc. This will give them time to burn off some energy and get focused for the day in the form of a reward. All the students need to do is be able to keep 3/4 of the given points by the end of the week (12 of 15 points), and they can participate. Students not earning enough points will stay in the classroom with a teacher and work quietly on independent work.
Thank you to all of the parents who have signed up for conferences; an email went out earlier from the office explaining how to login to Skyward and sign up for conferences. If you lost the email click here for the email. More than 90% of you have registered already, so thanks. Please get registered as soon as you can to get the time you want. You will only be able to sign up for your homeroom teacher, so if you want to meet with the other teacher at all please contact us so we can tell you what times we have open. We will also send a letter home next week to share with you the times Mrs. Topp or Mr. Singer at open for additional meetings, depending on who your child’s homeroom teacher is.
The students did a great job with the evacuation drill this past Monday. This week we focused on enhanced lockdown for our ALICE training for the students. We also completed the following lesson:
6th Grade - ALICE Lesson Five: Lockdown during ALICE
Lesson Goal: Understand the concept of LOCKDOWN and know what to do in order to respond effectively. Develop better body and spatial awareness to make movement in confined areas more efficient and effective.
Lesson Recap: Students learned the difference between a traditional lockdown and enhanced lockdown; making note as to when an enhanced lockdown would be most appropriate (during an armed intruder event when evacuation is not a safe option). A discussion took place on how the teacher and students could create a barricade. There was also a discussion what to do after a barricade is created (spread out around the room and grab an object to throw in the event the intruder gains entry to the room).
Talk with your child about the importance of listening to directions during any emergency situation. To view an example of an enhanced lockdown, click here.
FIELD TRIP ALERT: It’s official, we are going to see the Admirals on November 8th for a STEM day and a game. Our three chaperones will be selected on Monday. We will inform you if you were or were not chosen. The cost for chaperones is the same as the students, $9.25. Do not pay for chaperone until we choose who is going. If chosen, you will also need to make sure you fill out a volunteer form from the office too. We can always put the form in your child’s mailbox and send it home. For more about the Admirals game, click here. Permission slips went home on Thursday.
Next Week Thursday is Cousin’s night. Take the coupon you will get from your child and go to dinner at Cousin’s. We will receive a portion of each order to go to the PTO. For more information on upcoming events you can see our calendar page from our website too.
Please make an effort to join our Remind account and/or Class Dojo to keep up with information, behavior concerns, and other photos and stories from our classes. For remind to go www.remind.com/join/bradsinger and for class dojo go to www.classdojo.com/CT7L92M. Mrs. Topp and Mr. Singer will update through these two resources all year. Currently we are at 81% of the families connected with us on DoJo.
Throughout the year Mr. Singer will post pictures on our pictures page of the website too. Check out what is going on in the classroom. He also post what is going on on twitter through the Twitter handle @MrSingerClass such as the daily #Chuckism during the month of Chucktober.
Remember to check the assignment notebook board daily for homework and quick notes. We go through this with the students daily, but sometimes they do forget.
BONUS: Each week we will put a challenge on here for any parent or student to try. All you have to do is give a response by Monday in the assignment notebook for us to see. If the answer is correct the student will receive $50 towards their checking account. Good Luck!
